We've changed our name!
WICTO is excited to start the new academic year with a new name: Working towards Inclusivity in Chemistry Toronto (WICTO). This group was originally founded as “Women In Chemistry Toronto” in 2014 by a small group of graduate students looking to develop and support a community of women in the field of chemistry. As time passed, the members of WICTO expanded the scope of the group’s mission both to accept the many intersectionalities of its members and bolster other underrepresented groups in the department. Our work is rooted in the ambition of dismantling oppressive systems that persist within academia to make our department and university a more just and safe space for all. We are proud of the work we’ve accomplished in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion via our expert panel discussions, seminar series, volunteer outreach with local schools, mentorship program, journal club, and social events. As our group continues to grow, we will focus on inclusion in the STEM community for all equity-seeking groups. This makes the new name, “Working towards Inclusivity in Chemistry Toronto,” more in tune with our mission of committing to an intersectional approach to advocacy.
