Dr. M. Murphy
M. Murphy is a professor in the School of the Environment at the University of Toronto and the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Science and Technology Studies and Environmental Data Justice. They co-direct the Technoscience Research Unit, a community-centered and indigenous-led initiative at the intersections of science, technology, social justice, and the environment. One branch is the Indigenous Science and Ethical Substance Lab, which was established in 2024, supported by the Acceleration Consortium, and uses the lens of Indigenous knowledge and values in the practice of materials science, particularly with respect to chemical risk management and scientific data practices. Current projects in the lab include the development of Indigenous and Justice-based Life Cycle (IJLC) models to replace traditional Life Cycle Assessments for materials ranging from critical minerals to nail polish.
